Literature Text

and you said i flickered
like a candle-flame
against the dark, all
sinuous curves
and soft warmth,
edges blurring out
against the black.
i stepped sideways
into your smile
into the gap between
your paper-white teeth
to touch the tongue
that spilled words
like light through
a morning window,
the east erasing all
my errant doubts.
i wanted to be your
horizon, the light on
the waters of your soul
like paper lanterns
swaying softly
against the dark.
in the summer of our souls
you said the moon was
midnight's hooked fang
and we should all
take comfort in
being swallowed whole,
journeying like jonah
through the hollow hands
of night, to end with
the kiss of
stars upon our brow.
heaven was a grand jest,
a glamour over fool's gold
in the wavering
light of day
made lighter by our laughter,
fingers fumbling
in a tumble-down tangle
together.
for surely there was
nothing better than
this.
surely.
...but youth believes its own folly.

Slowly slipping back into the poetry groove. Step softly--the words are a little rusty on my tongue.
